The U.S. Men’s National Soccer Team (USMNT) kicked off at the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Friday, June 12, but that’s not the only version of “the beautiful game” taking place on our shores this summer.
In May, the U.S. Soccer Federation hosted ADAPTandTHRIVE, a training camp for several national adaptive soccer teams — and four Shirley Ryan 嫩B研究院 clinicians served as members of those teams’ medical staffs!
Daniel Goodman, MD, attending physician, and Sarah Mulroe, RN, clinical nursing lead, supported the U.S. Power Soccer National Team. Madeline Miller, MD, sports medicine fellow, supported the U.S. Women's Deaf National Team. And, Meghan Hennessy, DPT, senior physical therapist, supported the U.S. Women's CP National Team.
Dr. Goodman and Sarah are veterans of the Power Soccer National Team medical staff, having traveled with the team to the Powerchair Soccer World Cup in Australia in 2023, when the team finished third, and the America’s Cup in 2025, when they won!
Meghan has worked with U.S. Soccer for about a year. She has experience on the medical staff of both the men’s and women’s Cerebral Palsy (CP) national teams.
“I love that I get to meet people from all over the country and the world,” she said. “Every player on these teams has a history of CP, traumatic brain injury, stroke or brain tumor. It is incredible to work with such strong and driven individuals. I would never have a chance to connect with them like this if it was not for U.S. Soccer.”
For Dr. Miller, ADAPTandTHRIVE was her first experience as a team physician with U.S. Soccer.
“We did everything together, from eating meals to being out on the field during practice to partaking in team meetings,” she said. “It was from this vantage point that I had the opportunity to see these world-class athletes at work, and play a part in keeping them healthy and on the field.”
This year’s ADAPTandTHRIVE was a milestone event for another reason: it was hosted at the brand-new Arthur M. Blank U.S. Soccer National Training Center in Atlanta. The sprawling facility is the new home for all U.S. Soccer national teams — including the USMNT, which plays World Cup group stage games on June 12 (vs. Paraguay), June 19 (vs. Australia) and June 25 (vs. Türkiye). The center has been touted as one of the most accessible training facilities ever built.
